Things to Do in Grindelwald and the Jungfraujoch

Grindelwald sits directly beneath the Eiger's north face and is the usual starting point for the Jungfraujoch, marketed as "Top of Europe" at 3,454 metres and Europe's highest railway station. A return ticket from Grindelwald costs around CHF 220 in peak season, less with early-bird or Swiss Travel Pass discounts, and the round trip takes most of a day. The First Cliff Walk, a metal walkway bolted to a rock face above Grindelwald, is a cheaper and quicker alternative with views nearly as dramatic. Bachalpsee, an hour's walk beyond First, is the region's most photographed lake and earns it: on a still day the Bernese Alps reflect in the water. Book Jungfraujoch tickets in advance in summer, since clear-weather days sell out and cloud cover up top makes the trip pointless.
