Things to Do on Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) is best seen from the water, and the historic paddle steamers that cross it are part of the appeal rather than a tourist add-on. A round trip from Lucerne to Weggis or Vitznau takes about an hour each way and costs around CHF 30-40 depending on class, more with a Swiss Travel Pass discount. Weggis and Vitznau are quiet lakeside villages with palm trees in a microclimate that surprises most first-time visitors. Rütli meadow, reachable only by boat or a steep walk, is where the Swiss Confederation is said to have been founded in 1291 and is more a historical pilgrimage than a scenic stop. Bürgenstock, on its plateau above the lake, has a cliff walk and a five-star resort; the funicular up is free if you're staying or dining there, otherwise it's a paid ticket.
